CS4 Help offline? [YES!]

Postby gromit on Wed Nov 19, 2008 10:27 am

Hi guys

I've recently upgraded to CS4 and was horrified to find out that the help files are all online nowadays. I do a lot of work on the train and out of wi-fi and phone signal areas. Therefore short of carrying all of my reference books around with me, certain things that could be a quick fix by flicking through the AS3 reference could now become a real nightmare.

So I was wondering if I'm being thick and there is actually a way to reference the help files offline? If not, my productivity is going to dramatically reduce unless I reinstall CS3. Gutted!

In Flash CS4:
Window -> Extensions -> Connections

In the resulting panel, click on the little submenu icon (the one at the top right of the panel with 3 lines). Choose 'Offline Options'. Check the 'Keep me Offline' checkbox and accept the change.

Now, when you open Flash Help, it will open the local copy.

HTH ;)

PS - This is on Mac. If your on PC, the process might differ slightly.
Trust me, I know what I'm doing...

Thats fantastic - thanks!

Incidentally will this affect me in any other noticeable way, or will it simply localise the help files?

Also, is it me or is searching through the help files now pretty much impossible if you're not sure what you're looking for?! :?

I've just moved from studio8 to flash cs4. Help - what help? Navigating help is like looking for a needle in a haystack - I mean I thought the flash 8 help system was crap. I had to learn as2 in it's entirety just so I could find what I was looking for in the help system which kindof defeated the point.
The cs4 help system can be set to return less results - you can turn of the community sites etc and just return results from the cs4 help system, but the search engine adobe have used is not highly discriminative and it's indexing seems a tad sh*te to me.
I've only begun to use it so perhaps I am missing something but then if I am, perhaps adobe could have made more of an effort to tell me.
I have found that instead of using the search function you can navigate down or up through the logical structure via contents but this is slow.
I'm trying to migrate from as2 to as3 so that I can use all of the cool features of cs4, of which I know very little because the help is so difficult to access. The little I do know of the features of cs4 has come from lee's video intro.
To be fair, Adobe have provided access to a wealth of video tutorial type stuff, but I would prefer to use a decent help system.
The success of a product and it's uptake by the public is heavily dependent on the quality and searchability of it's documentation system/tutorials etc. If CS4 doesn't get taken up by a lot of people then will there be less flash content? Will the flash plugin takeup suffer as a result.
Perhaps I'd be better of with salivalight?
lol.

Not sure if you knew already, but in CS3 and CS4 if you highlight the item you would like help on and push F1 it will take you right to where you need to be. No hay stack getting in the way of finding that needle. :)

Funny, I was looking for this information, and it was the very first post in this category! I did as instructed and now I am receiving local information for the help files, which now pulls up in one second, as opposed to 10 seconds if it tried to go to adobe's site. Still...

The help files open in a web browser. Did Adobe do away with the help window all together?
